Life Tried to Throw Me a Curveball I Overcame Diabetes to Become a Pro eBook Dave Caiazzo Reviews
If I could give this no stars I would. Save your money and go to Malden Public Library. I can see why it's self-published. What I can't believe is that is co-penned by a sports writer, albeit a local sports writer. This could've been a good book describing diabetes and learning to cope with
it, instead it's a memoir about an egotistic ballplayer and his sexual exploits and how no girl could live up to his expectations of being a good mother to his future children. Give me a break. Does Dave "Cai" really think he's that good?
Dave Caiazzo's story of his baseball life and life-long battle with diabetes is fascinating and revealing. We all know baseball, it is part of America's fabric. But most of us are really unaware of diabetes and the devastating effects and consequences it plays in the lives of those who have the disease. The reader is introduced to Dave as a young baseball protege and, from there, we learn about Dave's baseball successes and being diagnosed with Type I diabetes as a teenager. In baseball, Dave has extraordinary successes in high school and later at the University of New Haven playing for legendary baseball coach Frank "Porky" Vieira. From there, Dave was drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies and played minor league ball in Butte, Montana. After an arm injury curtailed his chances for making the major leagues, Dave continued being involved with baseball from running one of the first summer youth baseball programs in the Boston area to later coaching at the college level and scouting for the Cleveland Indians and Los Angeles Angels. Dave also reveals his personal and intimate battles with diabetes which, in some cases, are near death experiences. Interwoven throughout Dave's story we meet many fascinating people who have helped Dave throughout his life. It is a heartwarming, unvarnished story of the hopes, dreams, and struggles of a baseball player with diabetes who succeeds in life because of the support of his family and his own perseverance.
