Aviation aficionados will especially revel in Telling the Wright Story by Joe Bullmer, a new scientifically and historically accurate, unbiased account of the birth of aviation. The fact is that what many readers think is all Wright, is actually not. In nine fully annotated chapters, complete with illustrations, the author unveils twenty-six myths surrounding the Wright Brothers’ research, testing, and contributions to early flight. Beginning in 1740, the author chronicles the evolution of flight and examines the experiments of Sir George Cayley, Otto Lilienthal, Percy Pilcher, Octave Chanute, and many others. In nine chapters with titles such as “Working with the Wrights 1899-1905,” “Secrets, Spies, and Enemies,” and “Birth of the Aviation Industry,” the book takes a decidedly international and all-encompassing approach and explains how it is that none of the designs originated by the Wrights were used in aircraft within a decade of their infamous flight.

A bit repetitive but makes his points with solid evidence.

The Wright Story Joe Bullmer 9781439236208 Books Reviews

Joe Bullmer has done a terrific job in documenting the real story of the Wrights. The myths built up around them have overshadowed what they were really like. Their accomplishments have been overemphasized. All of the inventors at that time who were working on flight should be credited, like Gustave Whitehead and Glenn Curtiss. It was refreshing to read this well-written book by this aeronautical engineering professional, who has researched the Wrights honestly. This book is superior to McCullough's "The Wright Brothers" because the latter is not the real story - Bullmer's is "The WRight Story"! I want to know about true history, not sanitized versions! As the author of "Gustave Whitehead First in Flight", I recommend this book!
I purchased this book for my husband, a 70 year aviation enthusiast, engineer and USAF veteran. He could not put it down. He knew some of the amazing things brought to life in this book but not in the documented detail delivered here. This is an exciting look at how the world got into the air.
This is an excellent book containing information many of us have never heard. It is a must read for anyone interested in the history of flight.

This book reviews in authorative detail the discoveries in aviation technology in several chapters.

Chapter one covers the period from 1740 to 1890, when an amazing amount of critical aeronautical technology was accumulated. Of course, certain data (with the benefit of hindsight) proved to be incorrect. It was up to the experimenter to accumulate these papers and separate the wheat from the chaff.

The second chapter reviews aviation technology from 1890 to about 1905, mostly as the result of glider experiences.

The third chapter shows what historical data was provided the Wrights by the Smithsonian and reviews the Wrights progress, step by step, change by change, by analyzing their progress and the errors that the Wrights made in view of the data made available to them, and what later advancements have proven. The review relies upon the Wright's own written records of their program, providing an invaluable insight into the validity of the author's comments.

The remaining chapters review the aeronautical field in the years since the Wright era, covering many interesting facets of this era. They also point out many of the false legends that have developed about the Wright programs, explaining how they came about. It can be taken as critical of the Wrights programs, but is (I believe) just a matter of eliminating many fables that have arisen over the years.

The author, Joe Bullmer,is a highly educated aeronautical engineer with a long and distinguished career in the industry. He is to be commended for producing a highly readable book which includes the results of extensive research into aviation technology over the past 250 years.
Do yourself a favor and buy "The Wright Brothers" by David McCullough instead, which is just as well researched, and more respectful and fair to the Wrights.
A bit repetitive but makes his points with solid evidence.
