I knew I was going to like this story when it started off quoting a line from Goodfellas, the line about never ratting on your friends when you get pinched. This story is told in first person as John, an eighth-grader, gets called to the principal's office. During this reckoning, John has a moment of clarity in his young life: to squeal or not to squeal. There is always the chance to stand that higher ground, even if your stance is somewhat shakily perched on misdeeds and wrong-doing. How will this kid manage to keep his balance while walking that sometimes narrow and crooked line between right and wrong, between self-preservation and allegiance? Told in a smart way and with a wry voice, this is a well-written short story with the idea that sometimes doing the right thing can suddenly just feel wrong.

This story reminds me of the day I faced a similar situation. No matter which of John Anson's memoirs I read, I find myself remembering a day in my life and saying, "I can relate to this!"
